Vehicle Description
For those of you asking for interior photos, I'm really busy. Just haven't pulled it off. Trust me, it looks great inside, dad was the only one who rode in it, and not very often.
There was a time when “special” and “limited” editions of U.S. meant crazy low numbers, on the order of a thousand or less. This car represents the end of that time. One of two very special packages offered this year, this is the “Collector Edition Corvette,” a Z-15 package based upon the popular 1982 offering, reborn to close out and pay tribute to the last C4/LT4 production year. It includes exclusive Sebring Silver paint, Collector Edition emblems, silver five-spoke aluminum wheels, and here, two aficionado-preferred upgrade options: a 5.7 liter 330-horsepower LT1 V-8 featuring a specially-prepared craknddhaft, steel camshaft and water pump with gears driven by a roller chain; and a good ol' six-speed manual transmission.
The regular Corvette Convertible of this year was considerably more expensive, and consequently, also much rarer, than other models, with only 4,369 rolled out. Combine that with the larger engine and stick shift, and you have a REALLY unusual eye-popping vintage machine.
But that's not the best part. The best part is that my dad the doctor owned this car. With fewer than 20,000 original miles, it was garaged most of its life, never in an accident, he cleaned it every Sunday with a cotton ball and an eyedropper. (The interior photo with my daughter actually dates to shortly after we purchased the car, she is now out of college and not part of the sale.) This car has a kickass engine, six forward speeds on the floor (manual transmission, you have to know how to drive a real car), it is truly in fabulous shape.
I dropped in a new battery because I had been chasing a couple electric gremlins, and am still wrestling with a couple minor issues:
1. Alarm: I think it works properly, and is just a bad design. It has a penchant for arming itself a minute or two after you cut the engine, and only seems to disarm when you move the fob away from the vehicle (as in, walking 20 feet away) and return. When I got the new battery and replaced both key fob batteries, it started behaving much better; it's still a little aggressive at arming, but from what I read from irritated owners across the great Internet, this may be something one has to live with unless you disarm the alarm mechanically, something I don't want to mess with. I haven't spend much time studying it, at this point I don't care.
2. Climate Control: Sometimes when you start the engine, it stays in the prior mode it had been set in, and won't turn on (or off). I was gonna have my mechanic look at it but since it seems to be largely functional, I'm letting this be for now as well. This problem is occasional, and since it clears within a reboot or two, it falls into the "as-is" pile.
So that's about the worst of it, for the most part it's a delightful automobile. I once dropped this puppy into fourth on 684 North, hit the throttle, and the town of Bedford actually moves six inches to the South.
