Kid is out of the nest and we ended up having 4 cars for the two of us.
Family decided that my Passat is going for sale.
Non smoking owner.
Most of the time, until 230xxx miles, fueled with 5-7% biodiesel for engine protection, after that using a "Sulfur Substitute' additive.
No check engine light, runs well.
Diesel fuel can be pumped also on stations for big trucks which is chaper(big size pumpig hole will allow).
Newer versions of 'clean disel' TDIs can't do it.

This is a pre-scandal VW engine, sometimes known as "smog exemped" TDI in CA.
-You can forget about smog pipe test at the station, cathalytic convertors replacements etc.
Wery convenient and practical design. Rear seats are folding down giving about 6 feet of flat bed.
At about 2004 Passat Wagon was voted best family car in Europe.
VW diesels are known for their longevity. I spoke with taxi drivers in Europe who said that 500k miles is common before needing engine work.
At 86k and 180k miles - timong belt, water pump, tentioner, other belts
AT about 189k miles Bistein-Sport(Yellow) shok absorbers

Recent work in the last 2-3 years:
- New Tandem pump replaced $300 (turn out to be unnecessary, but I'll give you also old one, still funcional)
- Transmission rework/overhaul, + new CV drive axles installed $3500 +
- New Engine mounts installed ~$300
- Transmission upgrade : installed transmission cooler $350
- Fuel injectors replaced $1000
- Starter replaced $1000
- New Front wheels bearings (Timken brand is installed) ~$400
- Cooling manifold + coolant replacement - $150
- Like-new alloy rims are installed (instead of old ones with some scratches) - $180,
- Istalled New Michelin tires @ 230xxx miles- $640
- Istalled New Condition Audi rims about year ago $200

ADDED to this post:
- In 2013 replaced transmission valve body with remanufactured one.
Valves are upgraded. Work done by "REVMAX Performance" in LA - $760 worth upgrade.
- Couple of years later replaced set of transmission EV valves with new VW OEMs.
(replacement didn't help. I have old funtional set to give), - $350 worth.
- 3 years ago replaced coolant manifold, engine coolant, coolimg system flush - $150
- EGR valve replaced with new one - $250

$8,930 in total

In 2008 and at 86k miles, I upgraded oil pump/chain drive to geared one,
so called 'balance shaft upgrade' or 'unchained TDI' , paid ~ $2600

Which makes $8,680 + $2,600 = $11,280 in total for replacements/upgrades parts and labor.

Do your own research, but here is briefly:
75% of this/similar type of engines suffer from oil pump chain drive failure before 200k miles, sometimes earlier.
This results in abrupt loss of lubrication and severe engine damage.
Dealers and other used TDI sellers are either keeping quiet about this problem or aren't aware of it.
Installed Upgrade Kit: Chain drive assembly removed. Installed oil pump with balance shaft assembly along with 3 gears.
This kit is specifically designed by Skoda(owned by VW) engineers to cure this issue. I have records and old chain driven assembly to present.
"Unchained" drive and new injectors improved fuel economy from 38-39 to 40+ mpg at 65mph on freeway.

ADDED : I will throw in Spikes-Spiders for front wheels for driving in snow, used 3-4 times ($350 if buyng new)
Also I'm throwing in :
- 2 New oil filters
- New air filter
- Top racks
- a can of genuine VW Power Steering fluid

Also, I'm giving to the next owner:
New: Glow plug relay ~$40,
Alternator sprocket ~$80,
Front grill ~$50,
Coolant temperature sensor ~$30,
Transmission filter and gasket~$40.

Not new, but functional: engine computer, tandem fuel pump, set of transmission EV valves,
remanufactured drive axle(driver side).

I'm a 2nd owner (bougt from dealer in 2007 with 48k mi on it). Originally the car is from Arizona.

Engine: 4 cyl 2.0 TDI (not affected by dieselgate scandal)
Transmission: 5 speed auto-tectronic
Alloy Wheels: 16", Tires: Michelin 205-55-16 (bough new in May, 2019 from Costco)
5 seats, rear seats fold flat, making ~6ft cargo area, heated front seats and side mirrors
sunroof, power locks, power windows, cruise control , leather seats, heated front seats, sun roof etc. Big cargo volume: 56.5 cu.ft
This year/model is exempt from tailpipe smog check in California, just show-up at the smog station with no check engine light.

It was taken care with intention to keep, but we decided to buy property in Tahoe area and will need 4WD car .
Selling also because working remotely, so don't need low MPG commute car anymore.
