360 bhp, 455 cu. in. OHV V-8, three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission, Posi-traction rear differential, independent front suspension and live rear axle, and power front disc and rear drum brakes. Wheelbase: 112 in.
Buick’s only muscle car for 1970 was the GS 455, featuring a new 455-cubic-inch V-8 that produced between 350 and 360 factory-rated horsepower, depending upon the state of tune. In the tradition of the era, those published ratings were much lower than actuality, to placate annoying federal bureaucrats and insurance company underwriters. Indeed, this would be the final great year for Buick muscle, as reduced compression ratios and a change from gross to net horsepower ratings conspired to sap away power the following season.
The 1970 GS 455 hardtop coupe offered here was completed at the Kansas City plant during the second week of December, 1969, finished in Gulfstream Blue and Glacier White with factory power steering and brakes, tinted glass, Deluxe steering wheel, recessed wipers roof and rocker panel moldings, rear end ornamentation, door edge guards, wheel well moldings, air conditioning, remote driver’s mirror, dual exhaust, and radio with rear speaker. These and many other options are confirmed by the original build sheet, noting delivery to the original owner by Scoggin-Dickey Buick of Lubbock, Texas. Current owner upgraded to a tilt column.
Reportedly the car remained with one family for nearly forty years before being sold to a new owner who undertook a ground-up restoration in his own shop. Such was the condition of the car prior to the work that all of the original sheet metal was able to be preserved, save only for a small trunk patch, and refinished in the correct colors using modern two-stage paint. The interior was upholstered in correct blue vinyl with branded floor mats, factory climate control, era-correct AM/FM radio, and Frigidaire air conditioning, as of which as re working correctly.
Under the hood lurks the original 455 cu. in. V-8, a numbers-matching unit rebuilt by John Chamberlain and equipped with an original, fully rebuilt Quadrajet carburetor and correct cast-iron intake, feeding port-matched heads carefully upgraded with the hotter Stage 1-specification valves and covering a modern competition cam. The exhaust manifold and stamped steel valve covers are also correct, as is the heavy-duty radiator. Indeed, the level of authentic detail to be found is quite impressive, including proper satin black-finished inner fenders, a Delco Moraine brake booster, a Saginaw steering box, and a reproduction Delco battery; GM-branded hoses and proper reproduction clamps are found throughout.
Power is supplied through a correct “BA” Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmission to a 10-bolt Posi-traction rear axle, equipped with 3.42 gears. During restoration the car was upgraded with power front disc brakes, matching the original power-assisted rear drums, all concealed behind polished Rallye wheels. A Gardner exhaust system produces amazing sounds.
In addition to the aforementioned build sheet, the car is accompanied by an original owner’s manual, emblem from the original selling dealer, restoration photos and receipts, a cam card, and miscellaneous component manuals. Further the trunk contains a correct full-size spare and jack.
Few of these muscle Buicks have been restored to this excellent standard, a true “show-and-go” car that roars down the highway as efficiently as it turns heads!
