Mercedes Benz officially entered the world of automobile manufacturing in 1926, but the company draw its history from decades prior with roots extending to Karl Benz’s 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen widely regarded as the world’s first gasoline powered automobile and the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaff 1901 Mercedes. Of course today the marque is known for producing some of the world’s best luxury cars and SUV’s, often combining luxury and performance as well as owning a rich racing history.

The decade of the 1940’s was devastating for the auto industry world-wide as car plants retooled to support military efforts for their respective countries. World War II saw many factories bombed in Europe and at the end of the war many industrial cities were in shambles. Following World War II it took several years for the West German economy to begin to recover, and by the middle part of the 1950’s Mercedes Benz debuted the 200A to great success. The 220 was built on the W180 chassis, earning the nickname “Ponton” because of the vehicle’s exterior shape, and entered the market in 1954 with final production in 1959.

In 1956 the 220S replaced the 220A, featuring some minor trim appointments and a one-piece front bumper from the former three-piece unit. The major difference came under the hood, as the 2,196cc engine was upgraded from a single carb to a pair of Solex two barrels. This effectively added about 10 horsepower to the motor and allowed the 220S a top speed approaching 100 miles per hour.

The overwhelming majority of the 220S vehicles were four door sedans, but in 1956 Mercedes Benz also introduced a two door model available as either a coupe of a cabriolet. Production continued through the 1959 model year with a total of only 3,429 two door models (coupes and cabriolets) ever manufactured.

One of the rare coupes, this vehicle is outfitted with a white exterior and the matching white interior is highlighted with rich wood accents and shiny chrome. Options include a rare AM/FM radio. Power comes from the 2,166cc engine with power transferring to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. While some 220S models had an optional electrically-controlled clutch, this car has the traditional manual clutch which works smoothly. A participant in the Colorado Grand in 2017, this car has been in the portfolio of the present owner since 2015. It is very original, with the seat belts being the only nod to the modern era and shows 18,717 miles on the odometer.
