Note that the Corvette C5 included several significant changes from its predecessor, the C4. These include a hydroformed box frame that offered an improved structural platform; relocation of the transmission to improve handling and a produce a 50-50% front-rear weight distribution; a new manual transmission capable of achieving a 175 mph top speed; and other design changes designed to reduce squeaks and rattles. It also included many cosmetic differences such as new wheel styles, paint colors and parallel windshield wipers rather than the opposed configuration used in every previous Corvette model.
In contrast to the reputation of high-performance vehicles for poor fuel economy, the C5 achieves comparatively high EPA ratings of 18 /25 mpg (city/highway) with the automatic transmission[ and 19/ 28 mpg) with the manual transmission, thereby allowing it to avoid the "gas guzzler" tax that is levied against most other vehicles in the Corvette's class.
