The good:
Starts reliably, runs and drives very well. I bought it as a donor rig, for the engine and transmission to put in another one I have with a better body. But it just runs so well I couldn’t bring myself to tear it apart. My daughter drove it to school until she went to college. So now it just sits.
The good to know:
It came from the east coast so there is body rust in places and surface rust underneath. It’s not horrible and I’ve seen plenty of worse off Land Cruisers. No holes in the frame as far as I can tell. Previous owner did some non-professional body work. There’s rhino-lining or similar product on the lower half of the body. It looks Ok. AC doesn’t work—I never tried to get it worked on so it might be as simple as getting it recharged. More under “repairs it still needs” below.
Repairs I’ve done:
All fluids changed: transmission, both front and rear differential, oil, brake, steering, coolant. New oil pan came with it when I bought it. I replaced the old one but I didn’t see any obvious reason to replace it other than rust. I did the front axle wheel rebuild kit using Marlin Crawler seals and good Japanese bearings. I replaced the transmission cooling lines as the old ones were pretty rusty. It actually doesn’t leak anything currently. New belts. Rebuilt the starter (New copper contacts), tune up that included spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and air filter. Newer, really nice Toyo off-road tires. Got the 4X4 to work—the linkage was stuck and that vacuum thing on the firewall was replaced. 4X4 works great! It really is a beast (Don’t forget to lock the hubs)! I rebuilt the hubs too. I replaced the tie rod ends and steering dampener with good Japanese ones. I replaced all the brake calipers/cylinders, brake shoes/pads, rotors and drums. Window runs so you can actually roll all four windows up and down. I sealed the driver side rain gutter so you don’t get your left hand dripped on while driving in the rain. It’s been a fun project that my kids and I worked on since we’ve owned it. We actually never really went off-roading only driving in the snow a couple of times to test the 4WD out and, like I mentioned, it is a beast.
Repairs it still needs:
I would replace the fuel lines as they’re pretty rusty. It had the fuel tank recall completed already; I checked. Brake lines were replaced by previous owner and it’s kind of non-professional. They left the rusty brake lines in place and kind of zip tied the new ones to secure them. I would take the rusty stuff out and properly mount the brake lines. The suspension works but it’s worn out and would benefit from being replaced or taken off, sand blasted, painted and rebuilt. The body is what it is, just enjoy the sweet sound of that awesome engine and transmission as it’s driving you around!
I have another 1989 Land Cruiser (blue) for sale as well for $8500. (It's also listed on Craigslist.) It has a better body and no east coast rust issues underneath but the engine and transmission need work. Package deal for both $15,000. I've added a couple of pictures of the blue one.
