Used 1987 SAAB 900 turbo convertible - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle... for sale in Brooklyn, NY
Vehicle Description
During my ownership I also installed a brand new ROTA 16x7" wheels with new Sumitomo HTRZ 205/50/16 tires, a Garrett T3 turbo and a Cherry Bomb glass pack in place of the catalytic converter. The exhaust note is nice and deep without being obnoxious. The transmission shifts fine with no grinding going in or out of gear and the engine is smooth and, while the idle surges a bit for the first 2 minutes on a cold startup, it settles down to 900rpm and purrs nicely after that. Car is pretty quick between 2,500-5,000 in all gears. Most everything works, including the electronic top, heat, defrosters, both power mirrors, all 4 windows, rear window defroster, seat heaters, dash lights, exterior lights, fog lights, and radio antenna. The original 1987 radio/cassette deck and equalizer work, but usually through only 2/4 speakers unless you twist the wires from behind or tap it juuust right. The speakers work fine. Happy to include a used 10 year old Panasonic CD radio with AUX-input for free. The convertible top works and is in great condition overall. It also comes with the tonneau cover and carrying case (pics 12 & 13).
The AC does not work, but it did perfectly until the compressor seized 1,000 miles ago, so I'm confident a used or rebuilt one for $200-400 (respectively) will remedy that. There is a power steering leak from the reservoir and a minor oil leak coming from somewhere. The oil does not require topping up between oil changes...the power steering fluid does. The front seats are comfortable and presentable, but there is a small tear in each bottom cushion.
Lastly, while the car looks 9/10 from every angle on the outside, there is a bit of rust underneath: the bottom of the trunk has rusted through in a couple places. The previous owners drove this car in the winters and kept it in a garage; the constant snow, road salt, freezing and thawing really attacked that one area (pics 14 & 15). It is not structural and can easily be fixed by cutting out and welding in sheet metal or pieces from a donor 900 convertible. I've been quoted $400-600 by different places in the tristate area. I would do it myself but I don't have enough time or maneuverability as it is. The jack points and rockers are solid (pics 16-19) as are the shock mounts (pics 20-22) and both axle tunnels up front (where most of these cars rust).
I know SAAB people always say they want their cars to go to a good home, but its certainly true, and this car is deserving of one. With a little rust repair, TLC and a tune up, this car will provide it's next family many years of enjoyment. Or, drive it as is for 20-30 miles per weekend, soak up the compliments you receive and admire how good it looks in your driveway...or rent it to a production company to use in TV or Film... Either way, this is a great little classic car.
