The engine in the 2.3-16 started life as the M102 four-cylinder found in the base 190E, but gained a 16-valve,
twin-cam head designed by Cosworth. It can rev to 7000 RPM, and made 167 horsepower when new—32 more
than the standard model. Getting power to the rear wheels is a five-speed manual transmission with a dogleg first gear.
This is the car that would convince BMW to build the first-generation M3 a few years later.
