Used 1976 VW Camper bus (Type 2) - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle... for sale in Santa Cruz, CA
Vehicle Description
The little history I have on the bus is that it was a “barn find” in Idaho. It was refurbished and eventually sold to the previous owner in late 2014 and shipped to California. Interestingly, although it is a Riviera, when it was refurbished it was labeled it as a Westfalia. Those familiar with the Riviera will know that it is a straight-up pop-top, with an upper bunk. When I bought it, it was fitted with a cabinet with sink ,and a refrigerator which did not work. When I replaced the floor, I discovered that this cabinet had suffered some serious water damage and needed to be removed altogether, leaving an open space, which I preferred since I never used the fridge or internal sink, I had considered installing a new cabinet fixture just for storage.
While I’ve owned it, the bus has been inspected and maintained by the BUSLAB in Berkeley and the Old Volks Home in Santa Cruz a few times. Additional maintenance and some minor upgrade work completed by me. I’m not a gearhead and could not go too deeply into any mechanical questions about the vehicle. You are welcome to have it assessed. As with all old VWs, there are a few spots of rust here and there but overall the vehicle body is great shape. The bus is fully drivable in its current condition. Bus passes smog and is registered through September 2021 with current smog cert.
All maintenance records and receipts available for the work that was done while I’ve owned the bus (and some from the previous owner also)
Here’s a list of the work that’s been done:
• Muffler and tailpipe replaced in November 2017
• BUSLAB fitted a custom made catalytic converter which to allows for easier passing of a smog test – tested and passed twice while in my possession.
• Replaced front seat belts with 3-point retractable belts in October 2017
• Replaced both batteries
• New sub floor and vinyl floor covering in March 2019 with soundproofing and insulation.
• New external shore power electrical connection and internal electrical socket
• Rock ’n roll bed / rear seat cushions and upper bunk mattress, reupholstered, with new foam in June 2019
• Rear shocks replaced in June 2019
• Replaced all five of the 14” stock wheels with 16” ones giving the bus a very stable feel while driving. Work done in July 2019. I have probably driven no more than a couple of hundred miles or so since then.
• Driver side window regulator and window seals replaced in July 2020
Other notable items:
• After removing the sink and fridge, the external louvre panels were replaced with stainless steel panels. Louvre panels still available.
• Camper comes with a tow bar attachment which I’ve never used
• Photos show original 14” spare tire on the front, new 16”spare will require an adjustment to the front bolts.
