Used 1965 Buick Skylark Gransport Wildcat 445 for sale in San Anselmo, CA

Vehicle Description

I’ve owned this car for 25 years now. Unfortunately, life, mortgage, kids and divorce are forcing me to let it go.
When I originally purchased the car, it had 130k on it. but was totally original (shocks, drive-line, interior, etc.) totally unmolested. Over the last 25 years, I have rebuilt the entire car and put another 70k on it as a commuter, occasional drag-car, weekend car-show, etc. The car is the most dependable car I’ve ever had, which I attribute to the Nailhead 401 architecture and the simplicity (only two belts; power steering and alternator).
Things I’ve done to the car:
Rebuilt entire suspension including Hotchkiss rear end components, all new bushing, larger front sway-bar and Wildwood front disk brakes and master cylinder.
I rebuilt engine following a series of articles in Street Rodder magazine, years ago (I still have the article with the ‘recipe’), transmission and rear end.
Engine is numbers-matching original 401, Wildcat 445 motor (rebuilt first, now with ~ 60k on motor). Mild cam, larger 650 cfm Edelbrock (original was a 525 cfm carter, still have in box). Hardened steel exhaust valve seats, new rocker assemblies. MSD distributor and ‘amplifier’ were major upgrades.
Transmission is a recently (10 k) pro, mild-race, rebuilt ST-400 Buick transmission with dual-stall torque converter (also rebuilt) All transmission work was done by and sends power to rear end via a custom 5’’ diameter drive shaft with 1320 U-joints.
With the ‘dual stall’ torque converter. the car absolutely launches like a rocket. (as the microswitches drop the torque converter from ‘high stall’ into ‘low stall’ (similar to ‘dropping the clutch’)
Hurst V-matic, ratchet shifter with reverse lockout, was modified to sit in stock location. Works perfectly, is loads of fun and looks perfect in the original center console.
Rear end is original 10-bolt but fully rebuilt with Moser Axles and Eaton posi unit (3.55:1 gears replacing original 3.08:1). Probably 50k on rear-end.
15 inch wheels are on car, shod with 225-60-R15, redline tires. (stock on ’68 Buicks, in ’65 the car had 14 inch wheels which look exactly the same). Car comes with second set of 15 inch wheels wrapped in Micky Thompson 255 Drag Radials (less than 10 runs on them, never did a burn-out with them). Probably 500 miles at most on them.
Most recent upgrade was installing new turbo mufflers and side turnouts, to look more original. Car is still somewhat ‘rowdy’ with the sound and camshaft, but completely streetable (idles at around 550-600 rpm).
Car was originally manufactured at the Fremont GM plant (now Tesla) back in 65 and originally came with a black vinyl top. When I bought the car (back in 1996) the vinyl top had been removed. I replaced it (see photos) but after 20 years, with the last 15 out in West Marin and no garage, the sail panels rusted out at the beltline, so I removed it, replace the sheet-metal and repainted it. I still have the original vinyl top trim to replace the top at some point. (that’s when I removed the interior panels, to access the metal. and just never got around to reinstalling them).
I have been restoring, maintaining and driving the car continuously for the last 25 years. over the last five years, I have been taking body shop classes at the local community college and have restored/repainted the back ½ of the car. (you can tell from the pictures). the front end sheet metal and doors were next on my list, as was the fire-wall (I planned on smoothing and painting body color). Rust is minimal and the car is incredibly straight with only minder door dings, considering it’s a 55 year old car. pinholes in the trunk and driver-side floorboards. Pinholes also at base of windshield. Driver side door is worst rust on car. bottom needs to be cut out and replaced. Surface rust on hood and front fenders. Car has never been wrecked, though my wife did back into the passenger side rear ¼ panel. pushing it in slightly. (there is a reason we are getting divorced).
